Finishing at the bakery 🙂

The quick summary of Day 5 is that we had only 100km into Cobar today. It meant we had a late start and avoided the cold, drove back out to where we finished yesterday, and then finished in good time this afternoon after averaging almost 30km/hr with a mostly tail breeze.

Now for some details:
– to avoid camping on the side of the road, we have stayed in Cobar 2 nights, which meant we didn’t have to pack up all our gear this morning and that was nice.
– it also meant we had the strange experience of driving back 100km to where we finished yesterday and then riding in.
– instead of kangaroos on the road, up here there is plenty of wild goats running around. It’s really interesting to see all the vegetation eaten up to where the goats can reach to standing on their hind legs. They tend to be better at getting off the road than kangaroos.
– during MADRIDE 1, I was fond of saying to the teenagers often that Prior Preparation Prevents Poor Performance (PPPPP). Today, we were saying it to William when we arrived out to our starting point and we were all ready with our bikes when we realised William wasn’t there. We yelled out there came a cry from behind a nearby tree that he needed a bit more time for some bodily functions to happen. He came wandering out with his shovel and toilet paper muttering about being rushed, and we were all telling him he should have sorted it out earlier!
– we say farewell to Scott and William tomorrow morning, and will miss them as we go on to Bourke and beyond. It has been excellent having them as part of the adventure. For a couple of novices who had ridden very little before this week, they have done a sensational job riding at least 100km a day.
